About MHI Risk
Engineers
MHI Risk Engineers exists for one reason: to help organisations prevent major incidents and stay compliant when the stakes are high. If you operate hazardous processes — flammable gases, fuels, chemicals, dusts, pressure systems, or high-energy equipment — you need more than generic safety paperwork. You need clear, defensible engineering work and practical guidance that holds up under real-world conditions.
We specialise in process safety and major hazard risk, supporting clients across South Africa with risk studies, audits, and training that improve safety performance, protect assets, and reduce business disruption.
We support organisations operating under the Major Hazard Installation (MHI) Regulations 2022 and work in alignment with Department of Employment and Labour requirements, IEC 61511 and relevant SANS standards.
- We help you quantify risk
- We help you strengthen safeguards
- We help you improve compliance
- We help you build internal competence through training.
- What we do
What we do
Our work sits at the intersection of engineering, operations, and compliance. We support organisations with:
- Major Hazard Installation (MHI) Risk Assessments aligned to SANS 1461
- Emergency Response Planning aligned to SANS 1514
- Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) and major accident hazard modelling
- Fire & Explosion Risk Assessments (FERA)
- Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) and equipment selection support
- HAZOP Studies and other hazard analysis methods
- LOPA and functional safety support (where risk reduction needs to be demonstrated properly)
- Process Safety Audits and improvement programmes
- Human Factors Assessments in industrial applications
- Chemical incident support (readiness, response planning, and incident learning)
- Training and courses that build internal competence (process safety, HAZOP, QRA, hydrogen, combustible dust, emergency response planning, ignition source control, and regulatory compliance)
In short: we help you understand your risk profile, reduce it with the right controls, and document it in a way that stands up to scrutiny.

- Oil & gas
- Chemical and petrochemical operations
- Energy and power generation
- Food and beverage manufacturing
- Cold chain storage and warehousing
- Water treatment and waste management
- LPG storage and handling
- Agriculture and pesticide manufacture/storage

- Experience
Experience that
matters
With more than 20 years of experience in major hazard environments, we know what good looks like — and we know what fails in practice. We don’t aim to produce “documents for the file.” We aim to produce work that helps you make better decisions, reduce major accident risk, and improve real operational resilience.
- straight answers
Transparent pricing and
straight answers
We’re not the cheapest provider in the market — and we’re very upfront about that. What clients value is:
- Clear scope
- Clear deliverables
- A realistic plan
- Transparent, upfront cost estimates
- No surprises halfway through a project
If you want a quick, low-effort tick-box approach, we’re probably not the right fit. If you want defensible work and practical guidance, we’ll add value fast.
- compliance
Why legal compliance is worth it
Here’s what good compliance and strong process safety systems typically deliver:
Compliance isn’t just about avoiding penalties — it’s about building a safer, more resilient business. Done properly, compliance work supports better decisions and stronger operations.
- Reduced organisational and individual risk
- More confidence in decisions (because risk is quantified and documented properly)
- Better data, clearer priorities (so you spend money where it reduces risk most)
- Efficiencies and fewer firefighting moments (less downtime, fewer surprises)
- A simpler, better-organised control “toolbox”
- Fairer, more consistent standards across teams and contractors
- Better relationships with regulators and stakeholders
- Stronger internal culture and talent retention (people want to work where safety is real)
- Transparency that supports trust — internally and externally
